How to make your own foaming hand soap...

Have you ever looked at the ingredients in your hand soap?  Have you ever paid attention to the price?  Do you ever think about how much plastic is thrown away and littering the earth?  I will show you a simple solution that will cut out the chemicals you are exposed to multiple times a day, save you money, and cut down on plastic waste!!

Ready?  Gather your ingredients! You will need:

  • Castile Soap  ( I use Dr. Bronner's, any scent.  Shown here are lavender and peppermint.  Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps are made with organic oils and use fair trade ingredients.  I bought mine at Whole Foods, but you can find it at many stores and on amazon.com)

  • Distilled water (City water has many contaminants.  Distilled water will help keep your soap safer from spoiling.)  **Update:  Since this original posting I have done some research on water and we now use a Berkey Water Filter, and stay away from distilled water for these reasons.

You will need a foaming soap bottle to mix your ingredients in.  I use old foaming soap bottles, and I even splurged and purchased a decorative one for our guest bathroom since we love making our own soap and we knew it was here to stay!  I bought this one at Bed Bath and Beyond, but you can find them at most stores.  Just be sure it is a a foaming pump!

Now you are ready to begin!  I just pour the Dr. Bronner's into my bottle until it looks like it has filled 1/4 of the bottle I am using.  Then, you slowly fill the rest of the bottle with your distilled water.  (Be careful you account for the large bottom portion of the lid that foaming bottles have!)  If you want to be precise, you can measure 1/4 of a cup of Dr. Bronner's and 3/4 of a cup of distilled water.  This recipe makes the perfect soap for our family, but you may like it less foamy, or a little more foamy.  Adjust it to your liking!  Once your bottle is full and the lid is on, have some little hands to give the bottle a gentle shake to mix the ingredients.

Your soap is ready to use!  Quick, easy, cheap, and less waste!

Enjoy!
